Damiana is a shrub native to southern Texas in the United States, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean. 

Maya Indians called this species mis kok ("broom for asthma"). 

Damiana has been traditionally used as a remedy against stomach ache, lung diseases related to tobacco abuse, bladder and kidney infections, rheumatism, diabetes, and scorpion stings. 

Today, it's commonly sold in headshops as a "legal high", because smoking the leaves may produce similar effects to smoking marijuana.
